Editing & Proofreading

PUNCTUATION, SPELLING AND GRAMMAR
If you think it doesn’t matter, don’t kid yourself. Someone will notice - especially if it’s wrong. You can make a permanent impression - don’t be remembered for your mistakes.

Punctuation, spelling and grammar are tools that enable you to express yourself in writing. A lot of people are reluctant to admit that the tools they have can’t do the job. An editor has the tools and the skill to put you in control of what you say and how you say it.

When it comes to the important things, don’t you always contact the people who know what they’re doing? Put your English in order - no one will think less of you.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?
Proofreading
Proofreading is like a tune-up or an inspection. You could do the work but a trained eye can pick out things you failed to notice. Proofreading is generally ensuring that things are in order; checking punctuation, spelling, grammar and flow; checking details such as headers and page breaks.
The proofreader goes through a final draft with a fine-toothed comb.
Copy Editing
When the work requires more expertise than you have, call a copy editor. In addition to correcting punctuation, spelling and grammar, copy editing involves some re-working to ensure order and consistency, reduce ‘wordiness’ and clarify meaning. The copy editor will do a first edit and make a diagnosis with recommendations for any further work.
Line Edit
Line editing is when a specialist is needed. Even if you knew what was wrong, you couldn’t fix it. An editor does a comprehensive edit, studying structure, style and substance, and provides a prognosis on the scope of the task.
